Belgium has quite a few large banks and Belfius is one of the most striking examples. The company is known for realizing proprietary payment solutions for customers. Partly because of this, they are not dependent on a nationally used phenomenon such as Bancontact, but have their own method. This method is called Belfius Direct: a convenient payment option to offer to your customers, also as a Dutch webshop.

What is Belfius Direct?
Call it redundant, call it a piece of service for loyal customers. The fact is that Belfius is one of the few banks with its own payment system - and so they are not dependent on, for example, the nationally used Bancontact. Belfius customers instead use Belfius Direct: a trusted banking environment with which transactions are carried out and payments to web shops like yours are paid.
How does Belfius Direct work?
In essence, the operation of Belfius Direct does not differ that much from that of Bancair or iDEAL. Customers also log in to a secure online environment here. This can be done via Belfius Direct Net (desktop), but also via an app (Belfius Mobile).
Belfius Direct Net works with readers and scanners that customers can use to approve payments. The mobile version works on the basis of QR codes. Customers can scan these codes and then pay immediately.
The benefits of Belfius Direct
The advantages of using Belfius Direct are mainly on the part of Belfius customers. They have their own payment method and receive clear overviews of payments, investments and other banking matters. The use of Belfius Direct is free and the bank praises itself for having, in its own words, the safest digital payment environment in Belgium.
The disadvantages of Belfius Direct
Belfius Direct has no real disadvantages - at least not for customers. As a webshop, you will probably also experience few problems with Belfius Direct, were it not that just offering Belfius Direct as a payment method is not enough. Where only Belfius customers use the phenomenon, you cannot avoid adding Bancontact and KBC as payment options if you want to be able to serve the entire Belgian market. And that can be disadvantageous, because it simply costs you more work.
Accept Belfius Direct in your webshop? These are the options!
The use of Belfius Direct in your webshop will in any case build up a relationship with many Flemish and Walloon customers. You take care of the integration with the help of a Payment Service Provider, which takes care of the financial communication between the customer, the bank and the webshop.
These PSPs charge different rates for their services. CM Payments charges $ 0.14 per transaction, making it the cheapest. Mollie and Sisow apply a rate of $ 0.25 and are the most expensive.
In addition to these fixed amounts per transaction, the PSPs also use a transaction percentage on the amount transferred. These percentages vary slightly and are usually around 1.00%. Perhaps interesting: at CM Payments, $ 0.60 per transaction is deducted.
Not all PSPs accept Belfius Direct as a payment method. You can not contact Adyen, Buckaroo, Digiwallet, Easy Payment Service, USDpean Merchant Services (EMS), Icepay, PayPro, Rabo OnlineKassa, Stichting PayDutch and Stripe for a link with Belfius.
