After a host of impressive wins and numerous Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) award nominations, the members of the Gorey Musical Society have returned to where it all began for a big party.

Returning from the event in Killarney, the band held a celebratory event at the Loch Garman Arms Hotel to celebrate their many victories with members of their local community. According to the president of the Gorey Musical Society, Concepta Church, it was a joyful occasion for everyone involved.

“It’s such an accomplishment to be nominated for an award, let alone win, and we’re thrilled for the cast and crew, among so many others, who worked so hard and achieved the recognition that Coming back from Covid has been tough, but we have a great team at the Gorey Musical Society, and our mission was to bring ‘The Sound of Music’ back to Gorey post-lockdown and give the town something to enjoy! “, she said. “We couldn’t do this without the support of our community and local businesses. We also celebrate our neighboring societies for their nominations and the wins received – Avonmore Musical Society, New Ross MS and WLOS.

According to Concepta, the group is in the process of planning their 2023 show, West Side Story, which they will perform on stage at the end of March.

The group was nominated for a total of seven awards for their production of “The Sound of Music,” and were thrilled to go home with gold in three categories. The Best House Management award was won by Carmel Byrne and her team. Stephen Acton won Best Director at the event and his win was made all the more special with his home company. Meanwhile, the Best Ensemble award went to the children of the Von Trapp family, who were the youngest winners in AIMS history. The children are Eimear Wolohan, Taylor Dench, Sofia Church, Charlie Church, Emily Hogan, Lyla Keane and Ellie O Donohoe.

Laura Carroll came second in the Best Actress category for her role as Maria Rainier. Meanwhile, Rónán P Byrne came second in the Best Actor category for his role as Captain Von Trapp.

The band also came in second in the Best Technical award and third in the Best Overall Show of the Night category.
