soul legend Mavis Staples and the end Helm of Levon (of The group) recorded a session together at Levon’s Woodstock studio in 2011, which ended up being their last performance together and one of Levon’s last recordings before his death. More than ten years later, this session is now released as an album, take me homeMay 20 via ANTI-(Pre-order). It features 12 tracks, including songs made famous by Nina Simone, The Impressions, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and more, and here’s what Mavis has to say about the performance: “It never crossed my mind. mind that this might be the last time we saw each other. He was so full of life and so happy that week. He was the same old Levon I had always known, just a nice spirit inside and out. […] We kissed and hugged and hugged. I just clung to him. I didn’t know it would be the last time, but in my heart and in my mind, Levon will always be with me as I take him everywhere I go. Yes indeed. I can see it right now. And some sweet day, we’ll be together again.”

The first single is “You Got To Move”, a traditional gospel which Mississippi Fred McDowell reworked as a blues song and which the Rolling Stones covered on sticky fingers, and that’s accompanied by a video featuring footage of Mavis and Levon playing together and hanging out backstage. Check it out below.

Mavis also has several tour dates coming up, including some with Levon’s daughter. Amy Helmincluding one to Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on 05/20, the day the album was released. All dates are listed below.
