What’s happening this week: Avondale Estates history exhibit, festivals, local government meetings – Decaturish

DeKalb County, Georgia – Several events are taking place this week in and around DeKalb County, including the Decatur BBQ, the Blues and Bluegrass Festival, the Parliament of Owls Midtown Lantern Parade, and the BeReggae Music and Arts Festival. The Avondale Estates history exhibit is now open at the DeKalb History Center and several local government meetings are taking place this week.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

DeKalb County Youth Soccer Registration

Registration is now open for DeKalb County Youth Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs soccer. Registration closes August 16. The program is aimed at youth aged under 6 to under 12 and will focus on skill development, physical conditioning and team training exercises. Registration is $ 40 per child and a birth certificate is required to complete registration.

The haven of health and happiness

An exhibit delving into the history of Avondale Estates is now open at the DeKalb History Center. The exhibition will also shed light on details that have been forgotten or simply overlooked in the story of the city. Avondale Estates was established in 1924 and was originally called Ingleside. The city has grown rapidly, moving mainly from farmland to a ‘house lover’s paradise’.

Stone Mountain Farmers Market

The Stone Mountain Farmers’ Market is open Tuesday, August 10 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the municipal parking lot located at 922 Main Street. The market has vendors with produce such as fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, and food available to take away. The market also has a loyalty program and accepts the SNAP and Georgia Fresh for Less programs. The market also offers music and activities for children.

Clarkston Career Fair

Clarkston Mayor Beverly Burks and the City are working with Worksource DeKalb to host the “Back to Basics… Engage Empower, Employ Career and Resource Expo” exhibit on Wednesday, August 11, 10 am to 2 pm at the Community Center de Clarkston, 3701 College Ave. More than 30 companies, including MARTA, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, UPS, FedEx and Grady, are expected to attend the event. Friends of Refugees will be available for advice on CVs. IRC and Core will also provide the first COVID-19 vaccines at the career fair. Additionally, residents of zip code 30021 will receive $ 50 gift cards for local businesses.

American Red Cross Blood Drive in Tucker

The American Red Cross is hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, August 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tucker Parks and Recreation, 4898 Lavista Road. The Red Cross is also hosting a blood drive on Thursday, August 12 from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Tucker First United Methodist Church, 2397 Fourth Street. Blood drive is by appointment only and temperatures will be checked upon arrival.

Decatur Farmers Market

The Decatur Farmer’s Market is open Wednesday August 11 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Decatur, 308 Avenue Clairemont. The market has vendors with products such as fruits and vegetables, eggs, meat, dairy products, grains, hot dishes, cosmetics, gifts and more. Masks are mandatory to access the farmer’s market.

Tucker’s Farmer’s Market

The Tucker Farmer’s Market will be open Thursday, August 12 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 4882 Lavista Road in Tucker. The market has over 35 vendors, including a diverse group of farmers, bakers, growers and local producers from Tucker, Metro Atlanta and Georgia.

BeReggae Music and Art Festival

Atlanta Reggae in the Park premiered in 2014 and has grown to become the nation’s largest free reggae festival. The BeReggae Afro Caribbean Music and Arts Festival is a three-day festival that will be held August 13-15 in Piedmont Park. The festival begins Friday, August 13 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Atlanta Independent Market will be part of the festival and will feature a selection of local independent and local artists, brands, stores and organizations. The festival will also feature a bonfire, an amusement zone and an augmented reality experience.

Oakhurst Farmers Market

The Oakhurst Farmers Market will be open Saturday, August 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Scepter Brewing Arts, 630 East Lake Drive in Decatur. Find all of your freshest produce, meat, delicious pastries and more from the weekly vendors. Additional offerings include live music and chef demonstrations featuring seasonal recipes.

Tucker Cruise

Tucker Cruise In is a non-profit, old-fashioned classic car show located on Main Street in Tucker. The event will take place on Saturday, August 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature a wide variety of cars, from antiques to street bikes, from motorcycles to imports. There is a nominal entry fee of $ 5.00 to enter a car into the jury.

Decatur BBQ, blues and bluegrass festival

The 20th Annual BBQ, Blues & Bluegrass Festival will be held Saturday August 14 at Legacy Park, 500 S. Columbia Drive. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the festival runs from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The festival offers a fantastic musical lineup, great barbecue, plenty of refreshments and family activities. The event is the largest fundraiser for the South Decatur Community Center and, through their grant program, dozens of Decatur-based charities receive support each year.

Owls Parliament Lantern Parade in Midtown

The Owl Parliament is a black and white owl-themed lantern parade based on community participation. Chantelle Rytter and Krewe of Grateful Gluttons will host an Owl Lantern Workshop on Wednesday, August 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Plaza Patio in Colony Square. The parade will take place on Saturday August 14. Owls flock to Colony Square Plaza at 8:30 p.m. and the parade will be at 9 p.m. and Black Sheep Ensemble will perform. The parade will begin at Colony Square, descend Crescent Avenue and turn left onto 11th Street before descending Peachtree to its starting point.

Avondale Estates Farmers Market

Join neighbors, visitors and vendors on Sunday August 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Avondale Estates Farmers Market, located in my parents’ basement parking lot at 22 N Avondale Road. Browse a colorful array of local foods and products. Items on offer include baked goods, cheeses, eggs, homemade jellies, meats and produce.

Upcoming local government meetings

The Avondale Estates Downtown Development Authority is meeting on Tuesday, August 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Avondale Town Hall, 21 N. Avondale Plaza.

The DeKalb County Council of Commissioners will meet on Tuesday, August 10 at 9 a.m. at the Manuel J. Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur.

The Decatur School Board will meet on Tuesday, August 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wilson School Support Center, 125 Electric Ave in Decatur. The meeting will also be available through Zoom.

The Decatur Planning Commission meets on Tuesday, August 10 at 7 p.m. at Decatur Town Hall, 509 N. McDonough Street. The meeting will also be available via Zoom and the city’s website.

The Kirkwood Neighbors Organization will meet on Tuesday, August 10 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

The Decatur Land Trust meets Wednesday, August 11 at 8 a.m. at the Cochran Building in Legacy Park, 500 S. Columbia Drive in Decatur.

The Avondale Estates Town Council will meet on Wednesday August 11 at 5:30 pm at Avondale Town Hall, 21 N. Avondale Plaza.

The Decatur Downtown Development Authority is meeting Friday, August 13 at 8 a.m. at Decatur Town Hall, 509 N. McDonough Street.

The City of Decatur Commission will meet on Monday August 16 at 7:30 p.m. for a regular meeting at Decatur Town Hall, 509 N. McDonough Street.
